The next time you raise your cup of white tea and say “To your health!” you can be assured that your well wishes are absolutely true! For centuries Asian civilizations have known the value of white tea and it has only been in the past few years that Westerners have begun to examine this for themselves.
ANTI-OXIDENTS: As the least processed of all types of tea, white tea has many great benefits, the first being that it is an anti-oxidant. In our environment there are many substances known as free radicals, toxic agents that are absorbed by our bodies and can damage our health long term. Anti-oxidants are found in certain fruits and vegetables and act as a sort of counter agent to free radicals. White tea is teeming with these wonderful anti-oxidants and can neutralize the free radicals found in our bodies.
ANTI-CARCINOGENIC: Flavonoids, which are known fighters of cancer, are present in high doses in white tea. These flavonoids, which are a class of anti-oxidant, actually keep cancer cells from growing larger and some studies have found that white tea works well for cancer prevention.
ARTERY ALLY: White tea is known to have properties that promote good artery health. What does that mean for those of us who suffer from many common artery ailments? This means that studies show white tea can lower at least one of the cholesterol components that block arteries, potentially causing strokes or heart attacks. For those of us who take Statins to lower our cholesterol, this might be worth a try.
For many of us, high blood pressure is something that we worry about, as it tends to be a “silent killer” and strikes many people who have no clue that there was even a problem. Promoting good artery health is part of keeping blood pressure lowered and studies have also shown that white tea does this, as well.
White tea has also been reported to thin the blood, another important factor in keeping your heart healthy and blood flowing freely through it. Studies have shown that people who consume two or more cups of white tea a day are fifty percent less likely to die after suffering from a heart attack. This statistic alone is worth the investment of a cup or two!
SKIN, TEETH, GUMS, ETC.: All of these areas have been reported to fare better in people who drink white tea than those who do not. Additionally, it has been reported that people who drink white tea have better bone density and therefore suffer less from osteoporosis. Rejuvenating affects of white tea on the skin could be the secret to turning back the clock hands on those tell-tale wrinkles that give our age away!
DIABETES: While white tea has been reported to lower blood sugar levels and possibly affect diabetes, remember that there are two types of diabetes. In Type I diabetics, blood sugar may be affected by consuming white tea, but do not toss out the insulin. White tea will not regenerate a pancreas that has stopped functioning at least not that we know of.
In all things, remember: there is no miracle cure for any of these ailments, but if there is a substance like white tea that makes any one or all of them better, we should give ourselves the chance to be healthier. Above everything, use good common sense and always check with your physician to make sure what you are doing is safe for your body.
